Making the most of your first dive in the Mediterranean

Breathing underwater for the first time, just a few metres beneath the surface of the Côte Vermeille: a taster dive is an experience that stays with you. You don’t need to be an athlete or a champion swimmer: all it takes is to be comfortable in the water and in good hands.

What a taster dive is

A guided introduction led by a qualified instructor, in shallow water, who takes care of all the equipment and safety. All you have to do is breathe calmly and enjoy it.

How it works

A briefing on land, kitting up, a gentle entry into the water, then the descent hand in hand with your instructor. You spend only a short time underwater, but the impression it leaves lasts a very long time.

A few tips

  • Choose a club (FFESSM, PADI or equivalent); check the minimum age required.
  • Be well rested and hydrated, and mention any health concerns (ears, a cold).
  • Breathe slowly, never hold your breath, and relax.

And afterwards?

A taster dive can open the door to full diver training. At MERveille, on 23, 24 and 25 April 2027, taster dives led by the local clubs will be on offer in the festival village, in Banyuls-sur-Mer: a chance to give it a try, over the course of a weekend.

A taster dive is always done with a supervising organisation and a medical certificate if required. Check with the partner clubs.
